The Higher Lane Curriculum
At Higher Lane Primary School, we are proud to deliver a bespoke Grammarsaurus 3D curriculum that is ambitious, inspiring, and carefully designed to meet the needs of our children and community.
Our curriculum is built around the Grammarsaurus principles of being broad, balanced, progressive, and knowledge-rich, while nurturing creativity, curiosity, and independence. Learning follows a spiral curriculum, where key knowledge and skills are revisited and deepened over time, enabling children to secure strong foundations and make lasting connections across subjects.
A key feature of the 3D curriculum is the integration of language across subjects. Grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and speaking/listening are woven into thematic units so that language skills are constantly reinforced in different contexts. Learning shows clear progression from simple to complex, with each year building on prior knowledge and gradually introducing more advanced grammatical structures and vocabulary to ensure a coherent trajectory of growth.
We place great emphasis on explicit teaching paired with application. Grammar is taught directly, but children are also given regular opportunities to apply their knowledge in reading, writing, and discussion so that skills become embedded and automatic. Through retrieval practice and interleaving, pupils revisit and strengthen knowledge over time, making links between prior and new content.
Our teachers make skilled use of scaffolding and adaptation, modelling and supporting learning so that all pupils can access and achieve, while gradually removing support as confidence grows. As children progress, we foster pupil agency and independence, encouraging them to self-monitor, self-correct, and collaborate with peers. This is underpinned by a strong focus on clarity and consistency, helping pupils to confidently use and transfer grammatical knowledge across lessons.
With these principles at its heart, the 3D approach ensures that learning is:
Deep – enabling children to gain secure knowledge and skills that are revisited and built upon through retrieval practice.
Driven – by high expectations for every learner, with adaptive teaching ensuring that all children are supported and challenged appropriately.
Diverse – reflecting a wide range of cultures, voices, and experiences so that our children see themselves represented and are prepared for life in modern Britain.
We use planned retrieval practice regularly to strengthen memory, deepen understanding, and help children apply their knowledge in new contexts. Because the curriculum is spiral based, units are taught in a carefully sequenced order to ensure meaningful connections across year groups and phases. Our teaching approaches are adaptive, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of every child.
Our curriculum not only meets the requirements of the National Curriculum but goes beyond it. It equips children with the essential knowledge and skills they need for the next stage of their education, while also fostering a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
At Higher Lane, we also place great emphasis on personal development: promoting wellbeing, positive relationships, and a strong sense of community. Through our curriculum, children develop character, respect, and responsibility, alongside academic success.
Our aim is simple: to ensure that every child leaves Higher Lane Primary with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed – and with wonderful memories of a rich and inspiring primary education.
