Science
At Higher Lane, we are passionate about improving children’s knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of science. We encourage children to ask questions; to be inquisitive and to be in awe of our natural world – from the enormous distances of space to the microscopic organisms that make up life on our planet.
We will teach children through investigation and research - using a variety of different scientific enquiries. We follow the scheme as laid out in Grammasaurus, keenly supported by Developing Experts.
In addition to the National Curriculum, Higher Lane is heavily invested with the Ogden Trust. A charitable organsiation that raise the profile of science, in particular physics, in primary school. Our links afford us the opportunity to uplevel our knowledge and skills, make connections with other schools across the trust and to offer additional activities such as Stargazing, Manchester University events and cross schools competitions.
Although science is a discrete subject, where possible we link it to other subjects within our curriculum e.g. music and physics, baking and chemistry, our school pond and biology. Embedding existing knowledge and adding deeper, holistic understanding. We consider science a dynamic subject and as such, celebrate our learning through class assemblies where parents are invited to come and watch. We celebrate the achievement of existing scientists and use them as examples for children to look up to.
We want our parents to be fully included in our quest for excellence. Parents come in to share their experiences the children linked to STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and children showcase their learning with drop ins when parents can see, first hand, investigations children have conducted themselves.
Science lends itself to questions and enquiry. Science is all around us - in every aspect of life so to foster that love of learning and thirst for answers is something we pride ourselves on.
